The Supreme Court modifies an earlier March 11 order in connection with a dispute over an NCERT Class 8 chapter on corruption in the judiciary. In the original order, the Court had directed the Centre, states and other bodies to disassociate from three academics—Professor Michel Danino, Suparna Diwakar and Alok Prasanna Kumar—after remarks that their work allegedly contained “offending” contents.\n\nIn a later order, the Court withdraws the adverse observations made against the three academics and clarifies that any comments were made in relation to the chapter’s contents rather than the individuals. The Court also recalibrates the directions it had issued: it leaves open for the Centre, states, Union territories, public universities and government-funded institutions the ability to take an independent decision on whether to proceed with or disassociate from the academics, without being influenced by the observations recorded earlier.\n\nThe modification is made while hearing a plea connected to the controversy, and the Bench reiterates that its earlier remarks should not be read as personal findings about the academics themselves.
