The head of UN peacekeeping operations in Lebanon says a smooth transition is critical before UNIFIL begins withdrawing at the end of the year. Major General Diodato Abagnara, speaking to Reuters from a UNIFIL position in southern Lebanon, says other UN agencies and Lebanese forces must be able to assume the tasks carried out by the peacekeepers.
Abagnara notes that UNIFIL has been monitoring hostilities in southern Lebanon for nearly 50 years. He also says UNIFIL is coordinating with the UN’s country team to prepare for the force’s eventual departure, including arrangements for humanitarian assistance in areas where UNIFIL will withdraw.
