A pilots’ association has asked India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) to conduct a comprehensive probe of Boeing 787 electrical and avionics evidence as part of the investigation into the June 12, 2025 Air India Flight AI-171 crash near takeoff that killed 260 people, including 241 on board and 19 on the ground. The Federation of Indian Pilots (FIP) says the timing and reliability of electrical power generation and distribution are central to understanding what happened.

In a letter dated September 18, the FIP urges the AAIB to scrutinise the aircraft’s “more electric” architecture and digitally integrated electrical systems, including electrical generation, power distribution, avionics integration, data-network performance, and software functionality. The association also raises questions about discrepancies it says appear between simulator-based technical evidence and the preliminary event timeline, particularly around when the Ram Air Turbine (RAT) generates hydraulic power relative to fuel switch positions. Separately, outlets report that the investigation is also dealing with material submitted by the US-based Foundation for Aviation Safety (FAS), which the FIP says alleges chronic electrical system failures and has shared non-public documents with UK investigators.

While the FIP does not claim a final cause, it asks the AAIB to validate or rule on the submitted technical materials, review the accident aircraft’s maintenance and health-monitoring records, and consider issuing interim safety recommendations if systemic vulnerabilities emerge before the final report expected around October.
