Affleck described the idea as appealing both creatively and logistically, noting it would have let both actors coordinate around their family schedules.
According to multiple outlets, a production delay eventually made Affleck take the lead role himself. The change came after planned availability for another major actor fell through, and Affleck stepped in. That outcome would have paired him and Garner as a married couple in the film.
Affleck also explains that the final decision reflected personal and audience considerations. He says he discussed it with Garner and that she told him, “We don’t wanna do that. You just get baggage,” referring to the way their public history could affect audience reception. Other coverage emphasizes that Garner’s departure followed these production changes, with another performer—Kerry Washington—ultimately cast instead of Garner. “Animals” is set to premiere Oct. 9 on Netflix.
