Sunday Igboho, a Nigerian activist, returns to Nigeria temporarily to bury his mother after his lawyer says Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun agreed to stand as surety for his conduct.
Human rights lawyer Pelumi Olajengbesi says he visited Igboho and later detailed the account in a Facebook post. He says Igboho contacted him in 2023 after his mother’s death and insisted he must return home for the burial rites. Olajengbesi then approached Abiodun, including asking whether relevant national security channels had been engaged and raising the expectation that any return would remain within the law.
According to Olajengbesi, Abiodun agreed to act as guarantor for a seven-day grace period granted for the burial. He adds that Igboho returned, carried out the rites, and left the country immediately afterward. The lawyer also says the broader matter was resolved through lawful engagements involving other prominent Nigerians. Both outlets identify Igboho as having left Nigeria in 2021 for the Benin Republic and returning in connection with the burial.
