French singer Amanda Lear accuses Miley Cyrus of copying her 1970s song “The Sphinx.” Lear says Cyrus’s new track “Redlights” on her recent album “Bass Persuades” shows similarities to Lear’s 1978 song. Lear raises the issue publicly, posting comments online that frame the resemblance as plagiarism.
Multiple outlets report that Lear later clarifies she does not intend to sue. She tells AFP that her label, Universal, and the publishers of “Redlights,” for which she wrote the lyrics, want acknowledgment regarding the alleged copying. Lear also says she has generally avoided legal action, describing her comments as a way to point out the situation rather than to threaten litigation.
Both sources link the dispute to the release timing: Cyrus puts out the “Redlights” track as part of her tenth album released last Friday, while “The Sphinx” is associated with Lear’s earlier work from the late 1970s.
