The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the U.S. Department of Transportation launch an artificial intelligence tool in the Washington, D.C., region to help predict flight delays and support air traffic operations. The system, described as the Strategic Management of Airspace, Routing and Trajectories (SMART) tool, is introduced alongside FAA efforts to improve how controllers and planners anticipate and manage congestion.
Officials say the tool draws on large amounts of operational data and provides guidance intended to prevent delays before they occur. Quartz reports the program involves an $875 million platform that centralizes 200 data streams to forecast disruption and optimize flight scheduling.
