HDFC Bank is in the process of selecting a new managing director and chief executive officer, with Anup Bagchi emerging as a leading contender, according to multiple reports. Bagchi, 55, is currently MD and CEO of ICICI Prudential Life Insurance and previously worked at ICICI Bank.
Several outlets report that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is evaluating Bagchi’s suitability for the role after more than three years in the insurance sector. The Economic Times says the RBI seeks feedback from the insurance regulator (IRDAI) and from ICICI Bank CEO Sandeep Bakhshi, focusing on whether Bagchi’s time away from mainstream banking could affect how quickly he adapts to regulatory and operating conditions. Free Press Journal and NDTV Profit also link the development to market reaction as RBI review processes progress.
HDFC Bank submitted two candidate names to the RBI in September, though the bank did not publicly disclose them. Alongside Bagchi, reports also consider deputy managing director Kaizad Bharucha. The RBI is also assessing his candidacy, with tenure constraints cited by some outlets. The leadership search gains urgency because HDFC Bank’s current MD and CEO Sashidhar Jagdishan’s term ends on October 26, prompting the bank to keep a succession timeline tight.
