Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay launches an expanded Kamarajar Breakfast Scheme to extend free breakfast to students in Classes 6 to 8. The expansion covers government and government-aided schools across the state and is expected to reach students currently studying in these upper primary grades.
The scheme previously provided breakfast to students from Classes 1 to 5. With the expansion, the programme now covers additional grades and therefore expands its overall reach within existing school networks. According to reporting from The Hindu, the scheme is set to benefit about 15.3 lakh students studying in Classes VI to VIII across 15,454 government and government-aided schools in Tamil Nadu. Other outlets describe the same shift in coverage to Classes 6–8 and the same category of schools, framing the launch as an extension of an existing state welfare initiative.
Both sources present the move as an expansion rather than a new programme, focused on broadening eligibility for free breakfasts for middle school classes within the state’s government education system.
