India will bring smartphone screen protectors under India’s compulsory Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) registration framework, with the requirement set to start on April 1, 2027. The government’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology specifies Indian Standard IS 19348:2025 as the basis for compliance.
IS 19348:2025 covers aspects such as glass quality, dimensions and strength. It also addresses product features including adhesives, anti-shatter films, and coatings such as oleophobic and anti-glare, along with blue-light filtering and privacy layers, according to reporting. The move is intended to set a quality baseline and reduce the circulation of sub-standard imports, which could also affect market supply.
Outlets also note potential business impact. One report says the new framework may require additional testing and certification, which could raise compliance costs and influence product availability. Another source adds that screen protectors become a newly included category within the existing compulsory registration order and highlights domestic manufacturing capacity plans, though these details are not universal across all accounts.
