Hyundai recalls Ioniq 9 electric crossovers in the United States due to a problem with the power-folding second-row seat mechanism. The seats may fail to detect obstacles during closing, allowing the fold to continue with excessive force that can create a crushing hazard.
One report says 5,360 vehicles are affected, limited to models manufactured between March 17, 2025, and May 4, 2026. Another outlet reports a broader figure of about 8,300 vehicles, describing the risk as related to the seats closing with too much force, including concern over children in the seat area. Hyundai indicates it received multiple owner complaints, including incidents involving alleged minor injuries.
Both accounts attribute the issue to the seat drive system not consistently reacting to obstructions and exceeding manufacturer-specified force limits. The recall focuses on adjusting or fixing the seat operation so the mechanism stops appropriately when something is in the closing path.
