The measures, announced for Friday, ban funeral wakes and gatherings exceeding 50 people, aiming to reduce contact during events that can amplify spread. The outbreak occurs in a region facing operational challenges, including limited medical resources and community resistance, which health officials say has complicated response efforts.
The World Health Organization updates its assessment, raising the outbreak’s risk within Congo from “high” to “very high.” WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus says 82 Ebola cases and seven deaths have been confirmed in the country. He also states that, despite the elevated risk locally, the overall risk of global spread remains low.
The two reports align on the public-health restrictions on funerals and gatherings, as well as the WHO’s stepped-up risk classification and the reported case and death counts.
