The Federal Government says it is working to announce a new national minimum wage to ease economic hardship faced by workers. Permanent Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, Dr Kamil Shoretire, makes the disclosure in Abuja during a capacity-building workshop for labour correspondents.
Shoretire says consultations and “background discussions” are already ongoing, but that no formal timetable for negotiations has been announced. He indicates that details about proposed changes and the negotiation process will be communicated to the media when the government is ready to engage the press. He also says the government is engaging workers in sectors where salary and allowance disputes remain unresolved.
The reporting frames the move against ongoing pressure from organised labour to review the current national minimum wage of ₦70,000, approved in 2024. Workers and labour groups are calling for a higher wage and additional demands linked to economic relief, including an immediate wage award and changes to petrol pricing, though the government’s specific proposals are not yet made public.
