Apple is testing a new iPhone privacy control in the iOS 27.2 beta that lets users restrict apps from accessing motion sensor data. The setting, described as “Restrict Motion Data,” appears in Settings under Privacy & Security, then Motion & Fitness, and allows users to block individual apps from using sensor inputs such as the accelerometer and gyroscope.
Both outlets report that the feature is aimed at a specific user experience in China tied to “shake-to-open” or motion-triggered ads. Some Chinese apps have been criticized for using motion data so that ads or redirects appear when users pick up the phone, move it, walk, or experience bumps while traveling.
MacRumors adds that Apple does not explicitly state the motivation for the change. It also reports that the option appears linked to mainland China App Store accounts in the beta, suggesting limited availability outside China when iOS 27.2 is released later this year. TechNode similarly frames the update as a way to reduce app capability that can drive motion-based ad redirects in mainland China.
