North Korea says it will keep its nuclear weapons “through all ages,” reiterating that its nuclear arsenal is permanent and irreversible. In a statement carried by the state news agency KCNA, Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui vows to “reaffirm and reconfirm” the country’s “steadfast will” to retain nuclear weapons.
The comments come after South Korean President Lee Jae Myung renews calls for a denuclearized Korean Peninsula, including proposals raised at the UN General Assembly to halt further growth of North Korea’s weapons capabilities and work toward a peninsula “free from nuclear weapons.” Multiple outlets report that Pyongyang frames its nuclear status as legally enshrined, dismissing efforts aimed at denuclearization.
