India is a net importer of finished steel during April-August, according to official data cited by multiple outlets. For the period, the value of finished steel imports is reported at Rs 36,193.9 crore, with imports totaling 3.487.3 million tonnes (MT). The country also continues to export finished steel, but exports are described as lower than imports on a net basis by quantity.
Outlets agree that inbound shipments rise year-on-year. Imports are stated to be up about 29.5% compared with 2.692.8 MT in the same period of the prior fiscal year. They also cite that export volumes increase, with exports during April-August rising 34.1% year-on-year to roughly 2.98–2.99 MT. The articles note that the import mix mainly includes hot rolled coil/strip, cold rolled coil/sheets, galvanized plain/corrugated products, and plates, bars and rods.
Sources differ mainly in emphasis and figures reported for the export value (one outlet highlights exports of 2.98 MT worth Rs 23,646.6 crore).
