Police in Nagaland report that at least 19 people die after consuming suspected illicit or spurious liquor over the past two days. The deaths are reported from Mokokchung district (eight deaths) and Tuensang district (11 deaths), according to police statements.
Authorities say a special investigation team is formed to trace the source and supply chain of the suspected adulterated liquor and determine the cause of death. Police have conducted multiple raids, arresting 19 people and seizing close to 3,000 bottles of liquor. Samples are sent for forensic examination to establish what caused the deaths.
In public advisories, police urge people to avoid consuming unidentified, unlabelled or suspected illicit alcohol. They also ask those who develop symptoms after drinking—such as dizziness, blurred vision, breathing difficulties, or loss of consciousness—to seek immediate medical care. Police indicate they have some leads but say it is too early to disclose detailed findings while the investigation continues.
