Public sector banks in India announce ATM charge waivers for September 28–30 as a proposed nationwide bank strike could disrupt branch and related services. The United Forum of Bank Unions, representing a large share of the banking workforce, calls for a three-day strike over demands that include moving to a five-day banking week.
SBI says ATM withdrawal charges are waived for transactions through ATMs of any bank across India during the strike period. It also points customers to digital and remote channels such as YONO, mobile and internet banking, and WhatsApp banking. PNB announces similar relief, waiving applicable ATM withdrawal charges across the country for the same three dates and highlighting mobile, internet and WhatsApp banking.
Other lenders follow suit. Bank of Baroda and Union Bank of India also announce waivers covering ATM transactions through ATMs of any bank between September 28 and 30, along with continued access to digital channels. Indian Bank states it will impose zero charges for withdrawals from other banks’ ATMs and for cash deposits via other banks’ ATMs during the period. Separately, the Ministry of Finance states public sector banks and regional rural banks operate normally on Sunday, September 27, with RBI approval for additional branch and operational openings.
