Lando Norris says he wants Franco Colapinto to receive a race ban after a collision during the restart of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. Norris was eliminated at Turn 1 in Baku after contact involving Colapinto that also took out Pierre Gasly. Norris also criticised what he called careless driving, arguing that the FIA should be stricter.
Several outlets describe the incident as a multi-car accident triggered on lap 30 under safety-car conditions, following Alex Albon’s crash. After the field restarts, Norris and Gasly are side-by-side at Turn 1 when Colapinto runs down the inside, locks up, and hits the Alpine, which then collides with Norris. Gasly is reported to be angry on the radio toward Colapinto.
While Norris demands a ban, race penalties already issued by the FIA are reported as a five-place grid penalty for Colapinto for the Bahrain Grand Prix (with the event held in Malaysia due to regional conflict). Outlets agree that race bans are rare in Formula 1, and that Norris’ remarks are made after reviewing the crash footage. Colapinto apologises, describing cold brakes/tyres and saying he locked up and was out of control.
