Halifax Regional Police respond to a call Friday night about a 23-year-old woman arriving at hospital in life-threatening condition and appearing to have recently given birth. Reports say the newborn was not with her when officers were called, prompting urgent police and ground searches in the Halifax area, including around Willett Street. Nova Scotia Ground Search and Rescue assists during the search, and police forensics work at a nearby property as investigators look for the baby.
Two days later, police say the newborn is found dead in a wooded area near Halifax. Subsequently, CBC reports that the mother also dies following the critical condition in which she arrived at hospital.
As investigations continue, at least two people are reported to be charged and four people are reported to be in police custody and questioned, with no charges initially reported at one point in the process. Police ask the public to avoid interfering with the area and to contact investigators if they have information.
