Senator Nkechi Nwaogu, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate for Abia Central, rejects claims that she remains a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Both outlets report that the disagreement follows accusations and counter-claims over her party affiliation and whether she complied with electoral party membership requirements.
The APC says Nwaogu is still listed in its membership register and points to her participation in its May 18, 2026 senatorial primary, where she reportedly finished runner-up with 12,033 votes. The APC publicity secretary also characterizes her publicly as remaining part of APC and asserts her details appear in the party’s database and in Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) records.
The NDC disputes this, saying Nwaogu joined the party before the INEC deadline for submission of membership registers on May 10. Nwaogu says she left the APC in early May, that her resignation was processed at ward level, and that she did not participate in the APC primary. Both reports note that INEC’s final published list names her as the NDC candidate for Abia Central, while another candidate is listed for APC, and they describe continuing tensions between the parties in Abia State ahead of the 2027 elections.
