The Allied Peoples Movement (APM) has strongly criticized Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, for comparing Nigeria’s petrol prices with those in the United Kingdom, describing his remarks as insensitive and calling for his resignation.In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Abubakar Yusuf, the party condemned the governor’s justification of the current pump price of over ₦1,500 per litre, arguing that such comparisons ignore the vast income disparity and purchasing power differences between Nigerians and UK citizens.Governor Okpebholo, speaking at the “Operation Rescue Benin-Asaba Road” event on September 24, claimed petrol sells for about ₦3,000 per litre in the UK when converted to naira, insisting Nigeria was “doing very well” despite challenges.Reacting, the APM described the comment as reckless, noting that while Nigerian workers earn a minimum wage of about ₦70,000 monthly, their UK counterparts earn over £2,600 (about ₦4.6 million). The party also highlighted Nigeria’s costly, informal transport system compared to the UK’s regulated and subsidized network.Yusuf further pointed out that petrol remains far cheaper in other oil-producing nations such as Libya and Iran, where prices range between ₦41 and ₦52 per litre. He warned that Okpebholo’s remarks could provoke public unrest and accused the APC-led government of subjecting Nigerians to “intolerable suffering.”The APM urged citizens to look forward to the 2027 elections, promising that its candidate, Engr. Seyi Makinde, under the party’s “Reset Agenda,” would prioritize the welfare of Nigerians over what it described as the APC’s “brutal policies.”
