NFR and IIT Guwahati launch AI system to monitor freight wagon doors and seals

Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), in collaboration with IIT Guwahati, has introduced Project DRISHTI, a cutting-edge AI-based technological solution aimed at enhancing the safety and security of freight wagons over Northeast Frontier Railway. The system was formally inaugurated at a programme held at NFR Headquarters, Maligaon, on 25th September, 2026. Project DRISHTI is being developed to strengthen the monitoring of freight wagon doors, locks and seals through advanced technology. The system brings together high-speed cameras, intelligent lighting, secure networking and Artificial Intelligence to enable efficient monitoring of wagon locks and seals and facilitate timely detection of possible irregularities or pilferage during transit. Representatives of IIT Guwahati and senior railway officials were also present on the occasion.Addressing the gathering, Chetan Kumar Shrivastava, General Manager, NFR, highlighted the critical role of freight transportation in sustaining the nation’s supply chains, transporting essential commodities and supporting industries and agriculture. He noted that freight transportation is particularly important for NFR, where geographical and environmental challenges make road transport difficult, making railways a lifeline for the regional economy. He further highlighted the importance of ensuring that freight wagon doors are properly closed and securely sealed to safeguard cargo. Earlier, this process was carried out manually and could be challenging and time-consuming, particularly during night hours and adverse weather conditions. Project DRISHTI addresses these challenges through faster, more reliable and efficient technology enabled inspection.As trains pass through designated monitoring points, the system is designed to examine freight wagons, identify wagon numbers and assess the condition of their doors, locks and seals. It can help identify whether seals and locks are intact or whether a possible irregularity requires attention. The system will also facilitate digital recording of inspection findings, supporting timely action by railway personnel.The technology-enabled monitoring is expected to help safeguard consignments, reduce delays and facilitate the work of frontline railway personnel, including RPF and commercial staff. By enabling faster identification of possible irregularities, the system is expected to strengthen freight monitoring while reducing the dependence on manual inspection alone. The collaboration between NFR and IIT Guwahati brings together academic expertise, Artificial Intelligence and railway operational experience to address a practical challenge in freight transportation. The initiative also reflects the potential for technology-driven solutions to improve railway operations and strengthen freight security.Speaking on the occasion, the General Manager congratulated the teams of IIT Guwahati and NFR officers, supervisors and technicians for their contribution towards transforming the concept into a technological solution. He expressed hope that Project DRISHTI would achieve further success and that the initiative would pave the way for more such collaborative projects between NFR and IIT Guwahati in the years ahead.
