Indian Energy Exchange (IEX) says its wholly owned subsidiary, Indian Coal Exchange Limited, has applied to the Coal Controller Organisation (CCO) for a licence to operate a coal trading exchange. The CCO is the regulatory authority overseeing coal exchanges in India. The company frames the proposal as part of expanding its market offerings beyond its existing electricity and gas-related platforms.
IEX says the subsidiary was incorporated on June 1, 2026. It plans to operate a physical delivery-based coal trading exchange that follows the Coal Exchange Rules, 2026. The exchange is intended to bring buyers and sellers together on a single, neutral marketplace, enabling trades at designated delivery points for price discovery and wider market access. The Free Press Journal also adds that IEX expects to leverage its prior experience in running transparent, technology-enabled trading platforms to complement its electricity market activities and support related functions such as facilitating I-REC issuance, though specific timelines for approvals are not stated.
