Google is testing a feature that lets some users buy products from Walmart-owned Flipkart directly within Google’s Gemini and AI Mode, according to multiple reports. In the test, a “Buy” button appears on select Flipkart listings. Clicking it takes users into a Flipkart checkout flow without leaving the AI interface.
The rollout appears limited in scope. Reports describe the feature as available to a small group of users and only on certain products, such as smartphones, electronics, and mobile accessories, while other users see standard Flipkart listings without a direct purchase option. Some outlets note that listings from other retailers may still appear alongside Flipkart results, but direct purchase is limited to Flipkart in this test.
One report, originally spotted by TechCrunch, says Google plans a broader expansion later in October ahead of India’s festive shopping season, though Google has not confirmed specific dates. The testing follows Google’s earlier introduction of the Universal Commerce Protocol, an open standard designed to let AI systems interact with retailer checkout flows. In this case, however, the checkout appears Flipkart-branded. Google also invested about $350 million in Flipkart in 2024 as part of a Walmart-led funding round that gave Walmart a minority stake.
