Volkswagen and its Chinese partner Gotion High-tech plan to invest a combined €3.22 billion to expand lithium-ion battery manufacturing in Europe and North Africa. The companies intend to set up three production lines jointly owned by Volkswagen and Gotion, aiming to increase capacity as electric-vehicle demand rises.

Across the planned sites, the projects are described as having the potential to deliver about 37.5 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of lithium-ion battery capacity and roughly 100,000 metric tons of cathode output. The initiative includes production in Europe and Morocco, reflecting a strategy to secure supply for EV production by scaling battery-related manufacturing closer to vehicle assembly markets and by adding capacity in North Africa.

While the sources broadly agree on the investment size, joint ownership structure, and the scale of planned capacity, they mainly differ in emphasis and detail. One outlet focuses on the investment and location mix—Europe and Morocco—framing it around global EV and battery demand, while another centers on the overall expansion plan across Europe and Africa.
