Sowore’s cyberbullying case against Tinubu adjourned to October 2

The Federal High Court has adjourned the trial of African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, to October 2, 2026, for continuation of his defence in the alleged cyberbullying case filed against him by the Department of State Services (DSS).Sowore is facing prosecution over social media posts made in August 2025, where he described President Bola Tinubu as a “criminal” and accused him of misrepresenting corruption levels in Nigeria. His earlier no-case submission was rejected, with the court ordering him to enter his defence.At Monday’s hearing, defence counsel Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika (SAN) informed the court that a subpoenaed DSS witness was absent, noting that the Attorney General of the Federation had previously agreed another DSS officer would appear in place of the agency’s Director-General. He argued that without the witness, the defence could not proceed and might seek an adjournment or a warrant to compel the witness’s attendance.Prosecuting counsel Akinlolu Kehinde (SAN) countered that it was the defence’s responsibility to produce its witness, dismissing reliance on social media reports suggesting the DSS intended to delay proceedings until after the 2027 elections. He urged the court to order Sowore to continue his defence or risk foreclosure.Justice Mohammed Umar ruled that the defence would be given another opportunity to produce the subpoenaed witness and adjourned the matter until October 2.
