The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrests Sandeep Mistry, an associate of fugitive businessman Nirav Modi, after his extradition from the UAE and brings him to Mumbai. Officials say Mistry is produced before a special court, and the court remands him to judicial custody until October 6. The CBI seeks custodial interrogation, though at least one report notes that it does not press for remand at the first production.
Mistry is described as having served as a director of Fancy Creations Ltd, linked to Modi’s Hong Kong-based business. The CBI alleges he plays an active role in the criminal conspiracy connected to the Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud and that the bank suffered losses of nearly Rs 6,498.20 crore. Outlets also report allegations that Mistry, along with others including Nehal Modi and another wanted accused, threatened dummy directors in Dubai to leave after the case was lodged in India, forced them to move to Cairo, and destroyed cellphones to erase evidence.
The extradition and arrest proceed while other legal processes against people linked to the fraud continue. The Economic Times and Free Press Journal also reference parallel investigations by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) into money laundering and related actions.
