Meta is set to end free messaging for a portion of WhatsApp Business API communication starting October 1 in India, introducing per-message charges for what are called “service” messages. The change applies to businesses using the paid WhatsApp Business API, not to personal WhatsApp use. Meta’s updated rate card shows that charges apply to message types that were previously handled under a free period.
Both outlets report that WhatsApp Business API replies are currently free only within a defined 24-hour “customer service window,” which begins when a customer first messages a business. From October 1, WhatsApp service messages become chargeable in India at about Rs. 0.115 (11.5 paise) per message, with additional details indicating a change to utility template billing so that certain utility messages are billed even if sent within that window. Times of India also adds a practical deadline: businesses must provide a payment method by September 30 to avoid service interruptions.
The differing emphasis is on what is affected and how: Free Press Journal focuses on the economics, including monthly free service message allowance and how multi-bubble support chats may be billed per bubble, while Times of India emphasizes the operational step of adding a payment method before the cutoff.
