Outbreak containment efforts also face unrest in communities near the response infrastructure. Multiple reports point to arson attacks on Ebola treatment centers in towns in the outbreak region, which highlight anger in areas already affected by violence, displacement and perceived failures by local authorities and international assistance.
Experts cited by outlets describe the situation as a compounded emergency rather than a single public-health challenge. Congolese authorities report suspected cases have surpassed 900 in the eastern region, with the outbreak focused largely in Ituri Province.
