WhatsApp announces new optional parental controls for teen accounts, allowing parents to manage aspects of teens’ privacy and in-app activity. The update includes tools covering profile and group interactions, visibility of Status and Channels-related settings, and restrictions for the Meta AI experience. WhatsApp says the goal is to help families agree on how teenagers use the service while keeping personal conversations protected.

Under the controls, parents can choose who can view a teen’s profile photo and who can add them to groups. Teens can loosen certain settings only with approval using a parent-set PIN. Parents also receive notifications when a teen joins or leaves a group, and when a group’s size increases significantly. WhatsApp adds options that determine what Status updates and Channels items a teen can view, and who can view the teen’s Status.

For Meta AI, WhatsApp offers parental selection between the default 13+ setting and a stricter “Limited Content” option. Across reports, outlets note the change follows earlier parental-control efforts for younger users, and that WhatsApp states end-to-end encryption continues to protect personal messages and calls even when controls are enabled.
