A World Surf League (WSL) surfing event at Raglan on New Zealand’s North Island is temporarily suspended after a photographer is injured by what organisers initially suspect could be a shark or a sea lion. Multiple outlets report that the incident occurs on finals day during the men’s semi-final at the New Zealand Pro, shortly before 8:30am. The photographer, part of the in-water media team, suffers puncture-type wounds and needs medical attention. A “code red” or similar safety response is triggered, and the competition is paused while surfers are removed from the water. Brazilian surfers Yago Dora and Italo Ferreira are taken out on jet skis during the disruption. The photographer is later taken to hospital and is described as being in stable condition in reporting from The Guardian. Organisers eventually determine the suspected attacker is a sea lion rather than a shark, with the event resuming after the incident response and medical assessment.
