UPI processes 24.07 billion transactions in September, taking the monthly volume down 1.8% from August’s 24.51 billion record, according to NPCI data cited by multiple outlets. Despite the volume dip, the total value rises to ₹29.37 lakh crore. Free Press Journal and MediaNama also note that UPI reaches a new peak in daily transaction count and that the average transaction size falls to around ₹1,012.

Times of India highlights a different emphasis: daily transaction values keep increasing through September, with average daily UPI value reported at about ₹97,913 crore. It says the daily value climbs 18% year-on-year, even as monthly volumes decline to about 2,407 crore transactions. Free Press Journal adds that September records 802 million UPI transactions per day and attributes the higher daily value to higher-value spending, including the festival period.

Free Press Journal places the figures ahead of an October 15 rollout of merchant discount rate (MDR) rules for specified person-to-merchant UPI transactions above ₹2,000, while peer-to-peer payments are expected to remain free. Other outlets focus mainly on the September performance without detailing MDR implications.
