E.ON receives approval to take over Ovo, allowing the firms to move ahead with a merger that will create a substantially larger UK energy supplier. The transaction will add Ovo’s customers to E.ON’s existing base, increasing the combined group’s footprint in the household market.
E.ON currently serves about 5.6 million customers, while Ovo has around four million. Combined, the companies are expected to form what multiple outlets describe as the largest energy supplier in Britain. The London Evening Standard reports the deal is expected to complete before the end of the year.
The outlets also situate the decision in the wider UK market structure. The Daily Mail and Mail Online note that the number of major suppliers holding most household energy market share is expected to fall from six to five, reflecting further consolidation among the biggest providers. The Independent similarly focuses on the impact for customer numbers, while the competition-watchdog framing is emphasized by the London Evening Standard.
