The Jamaica Medical Doctors Association (JMDA) is pressing the Industrial Disputes Tribunal (IDT) to provide a timeline and finalise its ruling in a long-running dispute with the Ministry of Health and Wellness over doctors’ overtime payments. JMDA President Jubilee Brown-Service says the tribunal has recognised that delays can deny justice, and the association calls for the award to be issued without further postponement.

JMDA also warns that disruption may occur in the public health system during a specified period starting 8 a.m. on Friday, October 2, 2026 until 8 a.m. on Saturday, October 3, 2026, with only emergency services expected to operate. The association says retroactive overtime owed to doctors is $31 billion, while the government’s calculation is $23 billion. The Jamaica Observer reports JMDA has activated protocols to minimise adverse outcomes during the disruption.

In response, the IDT says it has taken note of the JMDA’s pronouncements about potential delays in normal health service delivery if the award is not completed by Friday. Across the outlets, the focus is on timing for the tribunal’s decision and the impact on healthcare operations while the dispute remains unresolved.
