Apple says its upcoming foldable iPhone Duo includes a “replaceable” cover layer above the inner display. Apple’s hardware engineering vice president Kate Bergeron describes the layer as something customers can have removed and replaced if it wears or if the fold’s crease becomes more visible over time.
Multiple outlets cite Apple’s service documentation indicating that, in the U.S., AppleCare+ coverage lets customers replace the cover layer for $19 through Apple channels. AppleInsider reports this as a $19 “cover layer” swap, while MacRumors also points to Apple’s website for the same price with coverage and notes that the out-of-coverage cost is not yet disclosed. MacRumors adds that the cover layer is designed to help hide the crease in the middle of the folded inner display, and that Apple has performed “significant” engineering to keep it in good condition.
Both outlets indicate that repairs would be handled through Apple Stores or Apple Authorized Service Providers, rather than being a consumer self-repair. Pre-order and in-store timing reported by MacRumors places the device’s availability in mid-to-late October.
