Shiv Sena Rajya Sabha MP Milind Deora writes to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging the government to consider flydubai captain Smit Machchhar for the Ashoka Chakra, India’s highest peacetime gallantry award. Deora says he made the request as an MP from Mumbai and also on behalf of Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Shiv Sena.

In his letter, Deora points to a flydubai incident involving a flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv. He says Machchhar shows “extraordinary courage and presence of mind,” including continuing to act despite serious injuries after an attack inside the cockpit in which the co-pilot allegedly attempted to take control of the aircraft. Deora says Machchhar eventually opens the cockpit door, helping create an opportunity for passengers and crew members to intervene.

Outlets report that Deora argues the Ashoka Chakra can be awarded for “most conspicuous bravery” and may recognize a self-sacrifice beyond the responsibilities of a profession. NDTV notes Deora’s emphasis on Machchhar’s bravery and the role his actions played in enabling intervention, while the Free Press Journal adds references to public calls in Mumbai for the award and highlights Machchhar’s local roots.
