Egyptian authorities detain the entire six-journalist newsroom of the independent fact-checking platform Matsda2sh in raids carried out on September 28 and 29, 2026. Rights groups say the journalists’ whereabouts are unknown and describe the arrests as forcing families and lawyers to be unable to contact them. Reporters Without Borders calls it an unprecedented step in Egypt for a whole newsroom to be put behind bars, while other organisations cite what they call an escalation against independent media.

Human Rights Watch and Egypt’s rights groups say officers did not present arrest or search warrants during the raids and seized phones and laptops belonging to the journalists and some family members. They also say authorities failed to promptly disclose the legal basis or where the journalists were held. The Interior Ministry later acknowledged the arrests, accusing Matsda2sh of operating an unlicensed platform run from abroad and spreading “fabricated” or “fake” news, and alleged links to the Muslim Brotherhood, which the government has outlawed.

Matsda2sh denies the allegations. The six journalists are named by HRW and include Abdallah Qadry, Mohamed Ashraf Abu Emeira, Islam Barakat, Omar Helal, Mohamed Mahmoud, and Mohamed Adel. Authorities have not specified the exact charges, according to rights groups, and one prior editor was detained in 2023 for similar claims before being released after two days.
