SBI Research projects India’s retail inflation to rise to around 5.65% in September, with expectations that CPI could cross 6.5% in October and November before easing to below 6% in early 2027. The forecasts are set out in SBI’s pre–Monetary Policy Committee report ahead of the RBI’s October 5–7 meeting. It also notes that retail inflation increased to 4.82% in August from 4.45% in July.

The report links the expected acceleration to broader-based price pressures, with the share of commodities driving inflation rising from 22 items accounting for about 90% of the weighted contribution in January to 51 commodities by August. It also points to pressure from rupee weakness, citing factors including a stronger US dollar, foreign currency demand, and foreign portfolio outflows. Weather and global risks are highlighted, including monsoon performance and potential El Niño impacts on food-related costs.

Across outlets, both accounts agree that RBI baseline projections are likely to be revised in the October policy review, and that the central bank’s reaction could include a rate adjustment. One source specifically expects the repo rate to rise by at least 25 basis points, while both describe implications for interest-rate policy and the broader cost of credit.
