A survey by commercial insurer NFU Mutual finds that crime is widespread beyond major shopping areas. It reports that 91% of retailers in rural locations have experienced crime within the past 12 months, a figure described as comparable to the rate reported for urban retailers. Rural businesses included in the research range from farm shops to stores selling machinery and other equipment. The research also estimates the financial impact on affected firms: for each retailer that experiences crime, the average cost during the past year is £83,000. Some retailers report very high losses, with one in 20 victims saying the crime they faced has cost more than £500,000. Taken together, the findings indicate that shoplifting and other forms of theft are affecting a broad range of retailers in both rural and urban areas, and that the costs can be substantial for individual businesses. The results are based on the insurer’s survey of retailers and are presented as evidence that theft-related crime is spreading to, and significantly impacting, more remote communities.
