Delhi Police reject allegations circulating online that women protesters were physically assaulted during recent demonstrations at Jantar Mantar. Deputy Commissioner of Police Sachin Sharma says the claims are “baseless and misleading,” adding that female protesters are handled by female staff and treated with dignity, and that detentions and releases follow prescribed procedures. Sharma also says claims about male protesters being held beyond stipulated time are factually incorrect.

The protests take place as student groups, political parties and activists demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, citing alleged irregularities in the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter rolls. Separately, multiple reports describe allegations by women journalists that police personnel sexually harassed or assaulted them while they were covering the demonstrations. Delhi Police say the journalists’ complaints are being transferred to the Crime Branch for an “impartial” enquiry, and later issue guidelines for journalists on accreditation, visibility of identity cards, and maintaining a safe distance.

Other accounts also describe legal action against protesters. NewsLaundry reports that after a protest outside the Parliament Street police station seeking an FIR against an ACP, an FIR is registered against 17 detained protesters, and a court grants bail to them. In that coverage, the complainants and supporters argue no FIR has been registered against the officer accused by a journalist.
