Federal officials say the FBI arrested Wanying Zhang, 34, at a Los Angeles airport on Sunday. Prosecutors say she is accused of acting as an unregistered agent of China and conducting surveillance in the United States.

According to U.S. and Taiwanese officials, Zhang allegedly targeted a close relative of a Taiwanese government official, including the son of Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te and his family. The reports say Zhang traveled to Seattle in 2025 and, on direction from People’s Republic of China officials, collected and sent information such as photos, videos, and license plate details.

Outlets largely align on the arrest location, the identity and age of the suspect, and the broad allegations of unauthorized intelligence activity for China. They differ mainly in how they describe the targeted person—some specify Lai’s son and family, while others use more general language about a Taiwanese official’s relative. Several reports also note that Zhang was detained while attempting to depart for China.
