Canada names captain Alphonso Davies to its 26-player squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup even though he is recovering from a hamstring injury. Multiple reports say the injury occurred earlier this month during Bayern Munich’s Champions League semi-final against Paris Saint-Germain on May 6. Canada’s head coach Jesse Marsch includes Davies as part of the roster unveiled on Friday after a training camp.

While Davies is selected, his availability for Canada’s opening match is uncertain. Marsch tells reporters that Davies is likely to miss Canada’s first game, expected to be on June 12 against Bosnia-Herzegovina in Toronto. Reports also note that Davies does not join the team in Charlotte, North Carolina for training, remaining in Germany to continue rehabilitation. Other outlets add that the injury management plan leaves open the possibility that Davies could return later in the tournament.

Canada’s World Cup roster includes key attackers and midfielders alongside Davies, including Jonathan David (Juventus), Cyle Larin (Southampton) and Tajon Buchanan (Villarreal).
