Five cheetah cubs are born at Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh after an Indian-born female cheetah gives birth. Union Minister Bhupender Yadav announces that KJP21, a 32-month-old female, has produced five cubs, described as a milestone for Project Cheetah, the programme to reintroduce cheetahs in India.
KJP21 is reported as the third Indian-born female cheetah to give birth in India, following earlier births by Mukhi and KGP12. Several outlets say the cubs are fathered by a male cheetah brought from Botswana, marking the beginning of a Botswana genetic lineage in India’s cheetah population. Times of India also says the cubs represent the first Indian-born cheetahs carrying Botswana lineage.
In terms of scale, outlets report that India’s total cheetah count reaches 60 after the birth, with Free Press Journal adding that 41 of these are Indian-born cheetahs. Times of India and other reports say the mother and cubs will be closely monitored in the coming days, noting that cheetah cub mortality can be high.
