Singapore refers eight public officers to police following a review of property transactions involving officers who worked at agencies connected to MRT rail planning. The review covers 191 transactions and is aimed at checking whether existing safeguards are sufficient when MRT station locations are not publicly announced.
Coordinating Minister for Public Services Chan Chun Sing tells parliament that referrals do not indicate wrongdoing has been established and due process will be followed. He says further checks continue, and the government will study what the review shows about any gaps in current safeguards.
Outlets report that the review originated from a working paper by the US-based National Bureau of Economic Research, which flagged the 2007–2011 period as of concern. The Public Service Division extends the scope to 2014 for prudence, according to reporting, because many station locations were only determined later and information may have been limited during earlier phases.
