Defence Minister Rajnath Singh launches India’s first indigenously built fleet support ship, “Surya,” at Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL) in Visakhapatnam. The ceremony also includes laying the keel for the fifth ship in the fleet support ship series (FSS-5), alongside the inauguration of upgraded shipyard infrastructure intended to expand naval shipbuilding capacity.

“Surya” is described across reports as a 43,500-tonne vessel built with a high share of Indian content, designed for underway replenishment—refuelling and resupplying multiple warships at sea with fuel, water, ammunition and stores to improve endurance in the Indian Ocean Region. Reports also say five fleet support ships are planned, with HSL expected to deliver “Surya” next year and subsequent ships at regular intervals.

The shipyard upgrades include an extended and strengthened Slipway-4 and the commissioning of a 300-tonne (Goliath) crane, enabling construction and launching of larger vessels, with one report citing capacity up to 45,000 deadweight tonnes (DWT). One outlet further reports Singh also announces a second production line for Shakti engines in Koraput, linking the naval push to broader defence manufacturing initiatives.
