Former CBN governor Godwin Emefiele is on trial over allegations connected to Nigeria’s naira redesign policy, and testimony focuses on a ₦124.86 billion withdrawal from the federal government’s consolidated revenue account.

At the FCT High Court in Maitama, Abuja, prosecution witness Dr Ali Mohammed says Emefiele was not a signatory to the withdrawal. Mohammed also testifies that the Federal Ministry of Finance and the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation were unaware of the transaction. He says the ministry’s records classify the movement as a “direct debit,” meaning it is withdrawn from the Central Bank of Nigeria without recourse to an office in Nigeria.

Mohammed adds that the ministry only became aware of the withdrawal after receiving a letter from an investigation team related to a larger ₦154 billion claim. He says the ministry contacted internal divisions overseeing the CBN and received responses indicating no knowledge of the transaction. He further says documentation exchanged with the accountant-general’s office supports that it had not been informed and therefore did not approve the action. EFCC reporting also states that the withdrawn funds were not traced to Emefiele.
