Two women in Mumbai are accused of attempting to extort money from a hotelier, with the demand linked to a video that circulated online after a rat was allegedly found in a dosa. Police say the complainant, who runs a Borivali restaurant, reported threatening calls and demands tied to the existing “rat-in-dosa” clip.

According to reports, the incident began when a rat was allegedly discovered in a Mysore masala dosa, and a video of the matter was recorded and later shared on social media. The food safety authorities (FDA) suspended the restaurant’s licence after a complaint. The hotelier then alleged that he was approached by the two women, who threatened to register a formal police complaint and to further circulate or make the video viral unless he paid a sum.

Sources describe the negotiation as shifting amounts: an initial demand of Rs 25 lakh was reportedly reduced during in-person discussions to lower figures, and the women allegedly took Rs 1 lakh. Police say a trap was laid after the hotelier approached authorities, leading to the arrest/holding of the accused. The cases are being investigated based on the FIR and the hotelier’s complaint.
