Maharashtra’s government has directed bike taxi aggregators—including Ola, Uber and Rapido—to transition to fully electric fleets, with compliance deadlines reported as up to nine months. The order is issued through the State Transport Department and applies across Maharashtra, with implementation planned in phases via instructions to aggregators and regional transport offices (RTOs).
Outlets report that the timeline depends on operators’ current licensing status. Aggregators operating petrol-powered (ICE) bike taxis are given about six months to comply, while those with provisional or temporary licences under the Maharashtra Bike Taxi Rules, 2025, receive an additional three months. The move follows a regulatory push that began when the state introduced rules in July 2025 requiring that only electric two-wheelers—painted yellow and identified as bike taxis—are allowed for commercial operation.
Several reports describe earlier enforcement actions, including revocation of licences in March for platforms that did not meet initial requirements, and ongoing debate about whether a petrol-electric mix should be allowed. The Cabinet has also reportedly rejected proposals for a 50:50 mix, reinforcing the push toward a fully electric model.
