A 23-year-old woman, Amy Jones, is charged in Milwaukee after allegedly impersonating a substitute teacher at Rufus King International High School and insulting students, using explicit language and racial slurs, and reportedly playing loud music during the incident on September 24.
According to authorities, Jones told investigators she went into the classroom because she was “bored” and “hates kids.” Outlets report she had previously scouted the school for about a week, then entered by blending in with students and taking advantage of a day when multiple teachers were absent. Reports say she organized students by race and gender, made derogatory remarks, and allegedly suggested some students were “the type to start school shootings.” Police also cited allegations that she asked about vaping or marijuana.
The school says it used a safety scan, but district officials contend office staff did not follow proper protocol for validating her as a substitute. The school’s statements say she was not an actual substitute and that Milwaukee Police Department school resource officers and the district’s Title IX coordinator were notified. Jones’s lawyers say she has bipolar disorder and that medication issues may have affected her behavior. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for October 20.
